 | | Welcome to Calvert School! Founded in 1897, Calvert is a Pre-K through 8th grade, co-educational, independent school serving bright, highly-motivated students. As a 1983 graduate of the School, I have seen the positive, life-long impact that a Calvert education provides. The hallmark of a Calvert School education is an emphasis on fundamentals within a rich curriculum that builds a solid foundation for a lifetime of learning. In addition to a strong reading, writing and mathematics curriculum, Calvert features a science program including visits for all Lower School classes to the planetarium on campus, history and geography instruction utilizing the internally developed curriculum and materials, foreign language beginning in Pre-K, mythology, art, art history, rhetoric, music, drama, and Latin, among other things. Much of the curriculum in these courses has been developed by the experienced teachers at the school working in partnership with Calvert Education Services, the home school division of Calvert. The result is a world renowned curriculum that has been used to educate over 500,000 students around the globe. Every Calvert School student leaves having been instilled with characteristics shared by each class, from the first graduating class in 1903 to our most recent in 2009. A Calvert graduate is: an excellent communicator. a confident, well-rounded, and well-prepared student. has not only mastered writing and arithmetic, but also has excellent study habits, organizational skills and time management strategies. respectful, responsible and compassionate with a life-long desire for continued learning.
While staying true to deep rooted traditions, Calvert School is continually looking and moving forward. Students receive the same rigorous academic experience that the School's first students did, but with the benefit of state-of-the-art facilities and technology. As a Pre-K through 8th Grade school, Calvert is able to provide its students with intimate, nurturing educational environment and expanded leadership opportunities for Middle School students. The dedicated faculty continues to challenge students in all areas, preparing them for success at whatever secondary school they choose to attend. We are proud that Calvert students continue to receive top choice placement into secondary school as 98% of 2009 graduates were accepted to their first choice high-school. Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions about our programs, and I encourage you to stop by campus for a tour to learn more about Calvert, our students, and our community. We would enjoy welcoming you to our School. Sincerely yours, Andrew D. Martire '83 Head Master amartire@calvertschool.org
