Carpool Guidelines

Transportation/ Carpool Guidelines

General Guidelines

It is important that specific guidelines be followed because our carpool is located on a city street and not within a campus proper.

During carpool, please follow the following school guidelines.

  • Please observe posted speed limit signs as we are in a residential neighborhood and are concerned about the safety of your children.
  • Cars in the pickup line should never be left unattended.
  • Please observe all neighborhood parking signs. The city enforces penalties for illegal parking on Tuscany and Canterbury Roads.
  • Please stay in the carpool line as close to the curb as possible when dropping off and picking up your children.
  • Carpool drivers are not permitted to get out of their car to find their child. Teachers and Staff are stationed outside to find and load the children into the cars.
  • Children are not allowed to walk to the corner or other locations and may not cross Tuscany Road to access a carpool. Children who live in the vicinity of the School, and who walk to and from School, must present written permission, including their destination, before being dismissed from School.
  • Parents should not enter the upper lobby, hallways, or classrooms during dismissal times.
  • Please do not block driveways or street entrances and exits as you wait in carpool line.
  • Use of cell phones is not permitted once the carpool line begins to move.
  • To help ease the flow of vehicles through the dismissal line, please display in your windshield your carpool name(s) of the child(ren) you are picking up.
  • Parking for assemblies and other special events will be provided in the Middle School parking lot or at the rear of the Lower School.  Please drop off children at the main entrance before proceeding to the parking lot.
  • Please do not park in the driveway behind the Lower School at any time. Vehicles in the driveway area block the cafeteria loading dock and garbage removal access and are subject to towing.
  • Students should be instructed never to leave School with anyone other than the person who normally calls for them. If a child is to go home with someone other than the regular driver or if a child is to walk home who normally does not, a note to that effect must be sent to the School. Students who are daily walkers must have a note from parents, including permission and destination, on file at the School.
  • Please be prompt at dismissal time. Students remaining after carpool is completed (3:45 P.M.) will wait in the lobby, and parents will have their account charged in the amount of $20.00 per ½ hour or any fraction thereof. Late carpool drivers must come into school and check in with the receptionist to pick up students.
  • Students will be called out of School on the portable phone and in the order of the cars in line.
  • If a car is still waiting for a student after the other cars in the line have been filled, that car will be directed to pull up to reserved spaces above the apron.
  • Please do not turn around at Canterbury Road to come back down Tuscany Road after picking up carpool.

It is imperative that the School and its families observe these guidelines, which form a part of our legal agreements with the neighborhoods.

Lower School

Morning, 12:15 P.M. Pilot Class, and 3:15 P.M. Carpool (also used for 12:15 P.M. dismissals)

  • Carpool will drop off at the front door of the School. Cars should approach school from Linkwood Road.
  • Students will enter at the main entrance.  Lower School students who are dropped off at the Middle School may walk to Tuscany on the internal walkway. There will be a staff member on duty at the crosswalk on Tuscany Road from 7:50 A.M. to 8:30 A.M. to assist with crossing. Any Lower School student arriving after 8:30 must be dropped off at the Lower School building.
  • Cars should stack starting at the top of the apron.
  • Teachers/staff will be stationed outside to facilitate the carpool.
  • Cars should stay in line and follow the flow of cars to Canterbury Road.
  • If a car has special needs, that car should pull up to spaces beyond the apron as directed by the teacher.
  • No U-turns are permitted after exiting the apron at any time of day.  Cars must proceed east to Canterbury Road.
  • Students may not be dropped off across from the School on the Middle School side of Tuscany Road.

3:15 P.M. 6th Age - 10th Age Carpool

3:15 P.M. carpool congestion below Stoneyford towards Linkwood is an issue.  Early car stacking is the problem. Two-way traffic becomes difficult and emergency vehicles cannot get through.  To avoid long stacking lines and police involvement, we are asking parents to cooperate by using the following plan:

  • If the driver is the parent of a 6th Ager, please do not arrive at school until 3:10 P.M.
  • If the driver is the parent of a 7th or 8th Ager, please do not arrive at school until 3:15 P.M.
  • If the driver is the parent of a 9th or 10th Ager, please do not arrive at school until 3:20 P.M.

If you are picking up children of varying ages and/or if the driver is the parent of a 6th and a 9th Ager, for example, the driver should come at the time assigned to their youngest child.

In addition, stacking will begin closer to the corner of Canterbury Road.  An orange cone/marker will be placed where the cars should begin.

Lower School Children Being Picked Up at the Middle School

Lower School students who are being picked up at the Middle School will be escorted across the street at 3:10 P.M. and must bring a note from the parent stating who is to walk over.

  • Students are not permitted to walk back to the Lower School to retrieve a forgotten item.
  • Students must be picked up promptly.
  • Students may not remain at the Middle School and/or attend games or practices without parental supervision.
  • Students who are not picked up by 3:35 P.M. will be escorted back to the Lower School and must be picked up there.

Middle School

Morning and 3:15 P.M. carpool  5th - 8th grades

Cars enter the school from Charles Street and proceed to the lower circle at the south entrance. Students may not be dropped off at the upper door. Cars should stay to the right and proceed counterclockwise through the circle.  Students should exit from the cars when in front of the doors.  Cars remain on the right and follow the driveway to the school exit.  Students may not be dropped off on Charles Street. Charles Street is one-way going south and cars must exit to the right. Middle school carpool drivers should refer to the above lower school general guidelines where applicable.

4:15 P.M. carpool for after school athletics/activities

See above.  Please ask your child to come out from the locker room promptly at the conclusion of athletics.  Cars waiting for students and holding up the line may be required to move to the back of the carpool line.

Carpool Dismissal Changes

Should it become necessary to change carpool assignments or pick-up time for your child, please advise us of this in a written note that morning. We will make every effort to accommodate you. If arrangements need to be changed after your child has arrived at school, please call the school as early in the day as possible and before 3:00 P.M. since the child and teacher need to be located and informed of the change.
