Discoveries in ReadingOur Discoveries in Reading series is an excellent supplement to your core reading program. Select the appropriate level to encourage avid readers or students challenged by reading. While these courses stand alone, for families enrolled in a Calvert course, the themes are integrated with and reinforce the core instruction.

Discoveries in Reading Levels I through V will introduce children to literature, biography, and poetry. The selections in this course will reinforce and enrich the teaching of reading as well the understanding of language. The activities included in the lessons will extend your students’ learning and assist them in making connections, which are key in developing critical-thinking skills. Above all, this enrichment course will allow teachers to share the joy of reading with students. This wonderful gift will launch a life-long love of reading and help ensure students' academic development.

Levels VI, VII, and VIII will turn middle school students on to reading and give avid readers a thoughtful mix of literary classics and non-fiction works to read and enjoy. These courses recognize the developing maturity of children—the Lesson Manual features self-directed activities and a journal for the development of children’s analytical skills. The lessons also suggest a wealth of activities based on literary themes, including field trips, music exploration, Internet research, and watching films. Children are even encouraged to produce plays based on scenes from the novels! Your children’s analytical thinking skills will be developed as the upper level courses cover more advanced ideas and characters. Students enrolled in a Sixth, Seventh, or Eighth Grade Calvert course will especially enjoy a book of readings coordinated with their history studies.

certificateLevels I through V come with a wide range of books, a fun carrying case, lessons and activities for each title, and a poster-sized map to color that allows your students to track their progress.

Levels VI through VIII feature classic novels, modern novels, and historical readings, along with a self-directed Lesson Manual/Reader’s Journal.

For all the Discoveries in Reading courses, when your students complete the course, you will return a postcard included in the course and the student will receive a certificate and a small gift to celebrate their accomplishment!
