I recommend that everyone at sometime during their formal schooling study history, including modern history, world powers and ancient times.

As a seasoned Homeschooler I've found 10-12 to be a great age for starting many of these topics. Starting with Egypt and working through Rome, our house is often strewed with maps, charts, recipes, models and even potted plants. To focus, we find one good text with a lot of fun support material to be the best system. Our best loved textbook, very complete and easy to follow is from Calvert school in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. It is almost story form and is perfect for most aged 9-13. Never outdated, it is a good home library choice and will make history as fun as possible. It is my "pick of the month." It covers world powers, legends, governments and culture, the reasons why each declined and the rise of the next. Its 578 pages are at a level that makes comprehending easy.
