First Grade

The joy of our First Grade curriculum is watching your students develop into independent readers and writers. Lead them toward this big step through activities that develop a full range of phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. You will help your students build on the printing skills learned in Kindergarten
and begin to use our distinctive Calvert script, preparing them to eventually express ideas in their own words.

You will encounter our formal spelling program, which overlaps with the phonics instruction in the reading course. In math, your students will begin to add and subtract two-digit numbers.

In the technology courses, your students will learn word processing, computer navigation, graphics skills, and visual mapping basics. The science program progresses to include the study of living things, our earth, weather, matter, motion and energy.

Your students’ first social studies classes will explore original read-aloud
narratives that include biographies of well-known explorers, political figures,
inventors, and leaders in American life.
