What Your Child Will Learn • First Grade Tuition • Printable Information Sheet Course Overview
The joy of our First Grade curriculum is watching your child develop into an independent reader and writer. Lead him or her toward this big step through activities that develop a full range of phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. You will help your student build on the printing skills learned in Kindergarten and begin to use our distinctive Calvert script, preparing your student to eventually express ideas in writing.
You will encounter our formal spelling program, which overlaps with the phonics instruction in the reading course. In math, your child will begin to add and subtract two-digit numbers.
In the technology courses, your child will learn word processing, computer navigation, graphics skills, and visual mapping basics. The science program progresses to include the study of living things, our Earth, weather, matter, motion and energy.
Your students’ first social studies classes will explore original read-aloud narratives that include biographies of well-known explorers, political figures, inventors, and leaders in American life.
