Calvert School - Since 1897

Academics

At Calvert School, we base everything we do on the belief that the early years of a child's life are critical to his or her future success.

Children who have a good start—“the right start”—have the best chance for leading productive, responsible, rewarding adult lives. It is during these childhood and early adolescent years that a love of reading, skill in writing, facility with numbers, and a sense of curiosity and industry are developed and nurtured. Children inherently want to learn and benefit from a challenging educational program. At Calvert we take great care to create an atmosphere that nurtures the natural desire to learn and grow. We set high standards for our students, and the students continually meet them.

Our goal is to give each student the foundation of basic skills needed in order to succeed in today’s world and, at the same time, to stimulate the urge to learn, to explore, and to develop individual talents.

Our approach to educating our students is:

  • to challenge them to challenge themselves;
  • to surround them with the possibilities of success while minimizing the chances of failure;
  • to train them early and well to completely and effectively use the abilities they possess and the skills we can teach them; and
  • to help them use these abilities and skills to acquire knowledge and articulate that knowledge to their best advantage.

Calvert seeks to foster in each child an approach to learning and life characterized by a sense of enthusiasm, responsibility, and self-discipline. We believe that each accomplishment, whether personal, academic, artistic, or physical, leads the child toward a greater sense of self-confidence, poise, and presence. We also emphasize character development and an understanding of the fundamental principles of good citizenship. Students are encouraged to show respect for others and are helped to understand how their behavior affects others.
